Villanueva de Oscos, in the heart of the Oscos region, is a destination where history and nature intertwine in a unique rural environment.
Its main reference is the Monastery of Santa Maria, a monastic complex that marked the history of the municipality and still retains its charm.
Surrounded by mountains, forests and rivers, the landscape invites you to walk along trails that reveal traditional villages and ancient trades such as blacksmithing. The tranquility and authenticity of Villanueva de Oscos make it an ideal place for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the purest essence of western Asturias.
The route is made up of two circular sections starting and ending in the center of Villanueva. The longer one, about 12 km, coincides in part with the forest route.
The itinerary begins next to the chapel of Salgueiras, located on the AS-27 road, 6 kilometers from Villanueva. Throughout the tour we must observe the environment around us: the houses, their attached buildings, orchards, meadows, farm implements, forests, to understand the way of life of the locals.
The route starts in San Cristobal, a place where we find numerous samples of popular architecture in its purest state, giving us the sensation of having gone back several centuries in time. From its chapel we see the valley of Rio Ahio covered with a beautiful blanket of native forest that dazzles us with its typical colors.
The route starts in Villanueva, capital of the council, from where we leave in the direction of Santa Eufemia where there is still a beautiful chapel of popular baroque style built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that deserves to be visited. Continuing the itinerary along the road and after about three hundred meters of walking, we reach the Castañeira Bridge, and after crossing it we must take a path that goes off to the right, reaching a splendid birch forest next to the abandoned farmhouse of Abilleira.
Download the route in PDF and KML and follow the route with your mountain bike or MTB. With different levels of difficulty, duration, slope and length. If you don’t have a bike you can rent one.
The route begins in Santa Eufemia, shortly after passing the Ecomuseo del Pan in the direction of Pacios. We enter a small path through a native forest populated by oak, birch, holly and chestnut trees.
Recently, the Town Council of Villanueva de Oscos, with the collaboration of the Principality of Asturias, has recovered and rehabilitated the mines of this municipality.
The Ecomuseum shows us the complete cycle of bread making, from sowing the cereal to baking, harvesting, milling and kneading.
The history of Villanueva de Oscos is closely linked to the Monastery of Santa María, at the entrance of the capital of the council. This Monastery, considered one of the great jewels of Asturian heritage and classified as a Historic-Artistic Monument, was born Romanesque and grew Baroque.
